Terrier Hockey: WJCs and Goalies

Kevin Shattenkirk will don the Red White and Blue at the WJCs
It’s the last week of college hockey for most schools this week, and here at Let’s Go Terriers, I’d like to catch up and discuss some news that I’ve missed over the past few days. There are a lot of goings on in the world of BU Hockey… some really great stuff. I’d also like to comment on the goaltending situation at BU right now, and hear what you have to say about it.
First off, a couple of Terriers have been named to the World Junior team for the upcoming WJC Tournament. Those two were Colin Wilson and Kevin Shattenkirk. It’s great for those two, but they’ll be missed for the Denver Cup. With a potential meeting with Denver in that tournament, their teammates will need to be on their game. Wilson is a huge offensive force for BU, while Shattenkirk is one of the best offensive dmen that BU has. While it might be hard to think that this move might actually be good for the two, we should remember that Wilson went to the WJCs last year, and came back incredibly improved over what he had been showing earlier.
According to Parker, Wilson got the confidence boost he needed by playing in that tournament. He led the US team in scoring. Let’s hope that the same thing happens again this year, because they’ll be the catalysts for the second half once they return. Other notable players that were named to the roster include New Hampshire’s James Van Riemsdyk, and Boston College’s Jimmy Hayes. The full roster can be checked out on the USA Hockey website.
Now, onto the goalie situation at BU. Kieran Millan has more than shown that he is a capable #1 goaltender. With Grant Rollheiser nursing an injury, Millan started in the last 3 games, and didn’t lose any of them. He did look a little nervous at some points, but really held his own last weekend against Boston College. It’s not every week you hold BC to only two goals in two games.
That being said, I really like what I’ve seen from Grant Rollheiser. It doesn’t seem fair that the Terriers always manage to play better in front of Millan than Rollie. With his recent performances, many have been suggesting that Millan might be ready to go full time. I really hope that its not the case, as a rotation suits BU well right now. It’s been shown that one guy can go full time and lead a team to victory (John Muse… grumble), but it doesn’t always work. Would John Curry have been sharper if he had a capable backup? I think so.
What do you think… rotation? Or go with Millan as #1?
