Red Sox Reveal New Uniforms
December 12, 2008 by Joe
I was checking over at Boston.com, and had completely forgotten that the Red Sox revealed their new uniforms today. Just taking a quick look at them, I’m not sure how I feel about it. I really liked the Red Sox uniforms as they were, and I’m not sure that they needed a change. You can check out a gallery of the new uniforms here. I don’t know… some of the changes I do like, for example the alternate home jersey. I’ve always been a pretty big fan of the red jersey, I think it suits the team well. I also like the fact that the primary home uniform has not changed. What’s really changed is the road uni. The Red Sox COO, Mike Dee, explained why:
“If you look at the outerwear that we wear on the road, we’ve pretty much gone to blue as a road color and red as the home color,” Red Sox COO Mike Dee said to MLB.com. “This is really an exact continuation of that. We have blue dugout jackets on the road and red dugout jackets at home; blue BP jerseys on the road, red BP jerseys at home. This gives us a blue theme to the road uniform and then a blue alternate top.” - Boston.com
No, the image I used for this post is not the new uniform, before I get any comments about that too. Blah… the new uniforms just give me a bad feeling. I like retro uniforms sometimes, but I’d prefer it if they weren’t used all the time. These ones seem cold, without the red needed in them for character. That’s just my opinion though. You can watch a video of Francona’s opinion here.
He likes em… and I guess that’s all that matters, right? We’ll see how much the fans like them when the season starts. Maybe they’ll start to warm on me by then. The Red Sox have also switched up their primary logo to the double hanging sox, and will be using the circle sox logo as a secondary logo. I like this move, but I still prefer the “B” on the hats. It makes them so distinctively Boston. You just know from the hat. In any case, what do you think about the new uniforms?

My first thought about the uniforms was, “Wow, they look like the bland 1980 uniforms that I see on old clips on the Fenway Park video board…”
The Sox want their fans to drop more merchandise dollars, and thus they came out with these new uniforms. I would say that Boston fans are too educated too fall for such a ploy…but I know better. Just in time for the holidays!
I know! I’m really glad that the home unis are the same for the most part. The Red Sox are all about money right now… I mean they have to make up for not raising their ticket prices right?
Great game tonight… very entertaining, but much closer than I wanted it to be.
