John Curry won in his NHL Debut
Great news, BU Fans! It looks like one of our very own, John Curry, made his NHL Debut tonight, and got the win! This information is coming to me from Kat over at On Being a Sports Girl. It looks like Curry got his opportunity after Sabourin was pulled midway through the second with the Pens down 3-0. They rallied behind Curry to give him his first NHL win, 5-3.
The entrance of Curry sparked an incredible comeback from the Penguins, with 4 goals in the third period, including an Evgeni Malkin hat trick. Curry shut out the Islanders for the remainder of the game, but his play was overshadowed by what was happening in front of him. With Fleury still out, I’m hoping that the Pens will give him another look, as the team really responded well to his arrival.
From the game highlights, which I was unable to embed, he seemed quite solid, making some very good saves. Curry ended up with 11 saves on the night. Not a bad way to get your start in the NHL.. a half-shutout!
Curry admitted to being nervous before being put in:
“I didn’t have time to think. All I could do was just go in and play,” said Curry, a 24-year-old Minnesota native. “Believe me, it was very nerve-racking.” - ESPN
It seems like John Curry has always had a way of making his presence known. From his incredible story of walk-on to Hobey Baker Finalist at Boston University, to leading the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to the Calder Cup final, and now to the NHL, this is John Curry saying “I’m not going away… you’ll see me again.” This is an amazing story for a former BU great. It really goes to show the non-believers that Curry was and is the real deal. However, Curry will be the first to say that he’s not satisfied with what he’s already accomplished:
“My goal is to be in the NHL full-time. I’m not going to be satisfied with this call-up just like I’m never satisfied if I have a good stretch in the AHL.
I’ll be satisfied when I’m done playing.” - The Pittsburgh Tribune Review
You can check out the Game Summary and Highlight videos. A great day for sure for BU hockey. Congratulations, John Curry!
