Game 22 Recap: BU 5, BC 2
January 21, 2009 by Joe
It’s been a few days (far too many) since the tilt between BU and BC at Agganis Arena, and I think it’s time that I provided a bit of a recap. This has to have been one of the best performances for the Terriers yet this year, controlling play throughout much of the game.A great sign was that BU converted 4 times on the power play, showing their skill and speed, and ability to finish. BC, on the other hand, seems to be just a shell of the team that won the National championship last year. Muse was the only one who gave them a chance at all. However, as a Terrier fan, I know better than to count them out before their second half surge.
BC opened up the scoring early, capitalizing on an interference call to Jason Lawrence just 30 seconds into the game. In what would feel like a very long period, BU would pepper BC netminder John Muse with 18 shots, but Muse would stand tall. If that were any indication of how the game was going to turn out, it would’ve been a really long night.
Instead, BU took advatage of a power play early in the second. Nick Bonino would fire it home just 34 seconds into the second period, with assists going to Warsofsky and McCarthy. Colby Cohen, after being a healthy scratch against Merrimack, would blast a slap shot past muse at 8:04, again on the PP. From then on, it seemed like BU could do little wrong. Vinny Saponari added one as the period headed to a close, lifting it over the pad of John Muse.
The third period was more of the same, with BU adding two more power play goals, and again peppering John Muse with shots. Jack Parker had this to say about the game:
“Obviously, we got untracked in the second period,” Parker said. “Our power play was great. Our penalty killing was great. We had a lot of legs, and I thought it was our best game of the year the way we moved the puck through center ice, kept the pressure on with team speed because we were moving the puck so well. When you move the puck as well as we did tonight, you look a lot faster.” - USCHO

The Good
- The power play is getting stronger with each game. It almost doesn’t matter who is on the ice.
- Colby Cohen was much more focused and played much better than his previous outing.
- Matt Gilroy played an excellent game…. Matt Gilroy played… how about that.
The Bad
- Chris Higgins is still out.
- BC got off to a quick start, and capitalized quickly on the PP. Also the bad shorthanded goal at the end of the game.
BU is next in action against the University of New Hampshire at Agganis Arena on Friday. Game preview to come… let’s hope the Terriers can get this monkey off their backs and take one from UNH at Agganis.
